Fort Union functioned as an agent of political and cultural change in New Mexico and throughout the Southwest for forty years (1851-1891) It is the largest 19th-century military fort in the region. There are many things to do, including a self-guided tour of 1.25 walk on the interpretive trail that will take you through the entire fort. You can choose a shorter option, which is a 0.5-mile walk on the same trail that will take you through a portion of the fort. You can also take a Group Tour, enjoy an Interpretive Program which are generally offered daily, Join a special lecture in Glimpses of the Past, or enjoy a special event.
